• Letterboxing, although the prizes have been awarded and the original books have been sent to the Historical Society, the letterboxes have been cleaned up and are ready for more visitors! It's not to late to earn your collectible letterboxing coin -- visit the Letterboxing page for more information.

January 2007

• The kick-off of our Tricentennial Year was held on Sun., Jan. 28. A Multi-denominational Service was held at 7:00 p.m. at the Congregational Church. A reception followed -- READ ALL ABOUT IT!

March

The play "Sarah Noble Remembers", originally written by Joy Gaiser for Sarah Noble's birthday, was performed by the students of Sarah Noble Intermediate School on March 20th and March 22nd.

April

Fri. 13     Birthday Party was held at Hill & Plain School.

Sun. 22     "300 Years of New England Dessert", featured a selection of over 25 historical area desserts from the past three hundred years. Thanks to all the volunteers who made this delicious event possible.

May

• The first series of Letterboxing clues were officially released on Mothers Day Weekend!

Tues. 1     Law Day was held at New Milford High School. Lawyers and law enforcement past and present.

Sun. 6     New Milford Trust for Historic Preservation Annual Meeting, was held at the Silo.

Sat. 19     Bird Watching Walk at Sullivan Farm, was led by Mrs. Nichols.

Sat. 19     Concert at St. Francis Xavier Church was presented featuring Fr. Vit Fiala, the spectacular former cellist with the award winning National Theatre in Brno, Czechoslovakia; Fr. Tom Washburn singing selections of sacred music and the Village Ringers bell choir.

Sun. 27     Heritage Games Day at Sullivan Farm was hosted by the Youth Agency.

    Stories From The Past -- Members of the community are invited to Sullivan Farm to listen to readings of stories of everyday life in New Milford and the surrounding area. Bring your chair or blanket and enjoy a peaceful evening of storytelling at the farm. Space is Limited, call to register.

    Hunt Hill Farm is sponsoring a Free Family Concert featuring a sneak peek at the Winona Steam Calliope (weather permitting). Contact 860-355-0300 for more information and to reserve your seat.

4:30 p.m.     Gaylordsville Salutes New Milford's 300th Anniversary - Time Capsule Opening at Charlie Jones' Park followed by a Community Picnic at Williamson Park. Free hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream & drinks. Bring your lawn chairs and dancing shoes and enjoy the music of Back Porch Rockers Cajun Dance Band.

Sunset     Civil War Encampment On the evening of June 30th members of a Civil War reenactment group the 79th New York Company B will be encamped near the village green by the Lincoln monument.

Sun., July 1st     New Milford 300 Celebration Parade -- "A Time To Remember" Step off at 2:00 p.m., Wellsville Avenue to Young's Field. Check the Parade page for more details. Followed by awards and festivities on Young's Field.


MORE JULY EVENTS:

Sat. & Sun. 7-8     Revolutionary War Encampment The 6th Connecticut Regiment of Light Infantry will stage a Revolutionary War Encampment on the New Milford Green on the weekend of July 7 & 8. The Regiment is historically correct from the Revolutionary War era based out of New Haven CT, complete with men-at-arms, camp followers, musick and colours and regimental surgeon. The encampment will be at the northern end of the green near the Lincoln memorial and museum, open to the publick from 10 am to approx 5-6 pm with skirmishes and black powder performances on Saturday and Sunday approximately 2 p.m. We are also planning on having members of the Delancy Brigade (a Loyalist unit) near the Library.

Sat. 7     Tri-Centennial Hiking Trail dedication ceremony and family hike at 10:00 a.m. Shuttle buses available—check the newspaper for details.

12, 13, 14, 15     Friends of New Milford Library Book Sale at New Milford High School -- a must for bibliophiles and a great family social occasion too! Stop by for the best bargains on book of all kinds.

Sun. 15     The New Milford Commission on the Arts presents The Middletown Symphonic Band, free concert, 4:00 p.m. at the bandstand.

Sat. 25     St. Francis Xavier Church Tri-Centennial Concert Series: Join us for an evening of contemporary Christian music in the church. An evening of praise and worship beginning 7:30 p.m.
      Join us for the second concert of our Tri-Centennial Concert Series. Contemporary Christian Music Group, Lazarus, will offer an "Evening of Praise and Worship." Come and raise your spirits with this evening of inspiring music. Lazarus was begun in Manchester, New Hampshire by group leader Frank Howard. They have recorded several CDs of contemporary Christian Music. There is no charge for this event. A free will offering will be taken up.

Tu. 11     9-11 Memorial Service, 8:30 a.m. at Patriots Way

Sat. 22     Washington Oak Tree Monument, noon in Gaylordsville. The CTDAR and Roger Sherman Chapter DAR will host a Washington Oak Tree Monument and tree dedication Saturday, September 22nd in Gaylordsville at noon. The event will include a Revolutionary War encampment/re-enactment, refreshments, with a special presentation of the 2nd Reg. Light Dragoons on horse back. These events will take place on the Gaylordsville Firemen's Parade Grounds. The dedication will be on site at the interesection of Gaylord and Newton Rd. Contact Roger Sherman Chaper DAR for more information.

Sun. 23     Field of Flags, sponsored by Gaylordsville United Methodist Church. Opening Memorial Service at 3 p.m. Reading of names - daily at noon from Sunday, Sept. 23 to Sunday, Oct. 21. This is a travelling memorial, originally dedicated on October 23, 2005 at the Somers Congregational Church. The memorial honors U.S. Military who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq. Each flag represents not simply one casualty, but the family and friends who have been touched by that life now gone. They represent our respectfor those who have served and are currently serving in the military, and our hope ofr peace. A membory board listing each name is displayed at the edge of the field. At the opening ceremony, we will read the anmes of the fallen from Connecticut. Each day following, at noon, we will read the names alphabeticaly by state and honor them with a ringing of the bell. Please join us in this memorial by stopping by. Please pray for the safety of all of our troops and for their families.

Tri-Centennial Year Culmination Event -- plans are underway for an exciting end to our Tri-Centennial Year. Be part of the fun -- Commission meetings are the 4th Wed. of every month at the Congregational Church.

• Sullivan Farm Route 202 -- Farm tours available May through October. Contact the Youth Agency to schedule a time for your group to visit the farm. Tour the barns, see the machinery.

• The M. Joseph Lillis Historical Lecture Series featured local history experts speaking on a variety of topics. Additional lectures will be scheduled throughout the year -- watch for more information. Special thanks to our previous lecturers Charlie Barlow, Ron Lathrop, Robin Stack, Pam Edwards, Gary Smolen, Susan Murphy, and Barrie Kavash.
